Featured Project: Jane's Mediterranean Colors

Jane's Fireplace

The photos and pottery from Jane's travels reveal her love of blue. She wanted to feature a deep blue in her ocean-front condo, but outside the tropics, blue is devilishly hard to use in interiors. The blues in Jane's furnishings looked chilly, particularly when the fog rolled in. I suggested a warm gold for Jane’s living room. It’s a color often seen in the Mediterranean, where it is paired with blue and orange. This palette is a favorite of the Provencal region of France.

Featured Project: Accessible Kitchen

Your average kitchen is an obstacle course for someone who uses a wheelchair. That's why I recently asked noted psychologist, professor and disability activist Dr. Rhoda Olkin to review the plans I had done for a wheelchair accessible kitchen.

Rhoda's comment, “It’s rare to find a designer who really understands the barriers and is able to see creatively how to erase them. To do it with the beauty of the design that Nicolette has created is amazing."

Featured Project: Beautiful and Hypoallegenic

Interior design

This looks like a nice but unremarkable room - and that's what's so remarkable about it.

It's the designer's own home, and this is a hypo-allergenic living room, designed to be beautiful and hospitable to people, while being quite inhospitable to dustmites.

When my doctor told me that I was going to have to live in a hypo-allergenic environment, I pictured a hospital room. And I hated the idea!

But a room without carpets, curtains, and cloth upholstery can be gorgeous - a real breath of fresh air, as this photo proves.
