Before I begin to design, I ask clients to fill in the survey at left. My emphasis on issues of health, convenience, comfort and environmental responsibity results in rooms that reflect my clients' tastes rather than the "international style" of design made famous by those architectural giants. (Mere mortals sometimes feel uncomfortable in rooms designed by and for giants.)

My first step is to learn how each of your rooms should function to enhance your activities. Do you entertain frequently? Or is your home a retreat - a place where entertaining occurs only on holidays?

My second step is to listen. Your answers to questions like those enable me to set priorities: Those who give dinner parties need a dedicated dining room. If you set out the china only once a year, you are probably using the dining room for far more than eating and need flexible space.

The steps I take to solve your problems can include:

The Room Design Survey

PART 1: Choose a room, then answer questions 1 - 4. There's no score for this section, but it will focus your thoughts for Part 2. Section 3 will allow you to give a letter grade of A-F to your room.

_____ Other: _____________________________

PART 2. Score by adding or subtracting points as indicated for each question.

Poorly
(+1 Point)

Very badly
(+0 points)
Main Activity
Secondary Activity
Third Activity

  • Usually comfortable and content (add 1 point)
  • Neutral (add 0 points)
  • Restless, uncomfortable (subtract 1 point)

  • Really pleasing (add 5 points)
  • Just okay (add 2 points)

PART 3. Score the colored section of quiz above, and assign a letter grade to your room:

  • 18-20 points -A: A design triumph! Congratulations, your room meets your needs very well.
  • 15-17 points -B: This is a good room, but it could be better with just a little help. You might need to make some changes to better accomodate secondary activities, improve the color palette or showcase your belongings.
  • 12-15 -C: An adequate room in some respects, but you could be much happier here. You probably need help with space planning to better accomodate your activities, lifestyle and health. You might also benefit from a color and style consultation.
  • 10-12 -D: This room has serious deficiencies; you could definitely use some help! You first need space planning to choose furnishings and storage that will better accomodate your health and lifestyle needs. After that, you might also want to consider a style and/or color palette consultation.
  • 9 and below: F: You shouldn't be treated like this - you deserve better! This room needs professional help.
